With Perfect Faith
The Foundations of Jewish Belief
J. David Bleich
With Perfect Faith is an innovative approach to the study of Jewish philosophy. In this volume, Professor Bleich has organized his selections, drawn from the major figures of medieval Jewish philosophy, around Maimonides' Thirteen Principals of Faith, the most widely accepted creedal statement of Judaism. In so structuring the work, he has devised a superb, systematic approach to the understanding of Jewish belief.
The work contains a mine of information and presents selections in the crucial issues of faith from the writings of virtually every significant medieval Jewish philosopher including Saadia, Bahya, Halevi, Ibn Daud, Maimonides, Nahmanides, Gersonides, Crescas, Albo and Abravanel. No previous text on Jewish philosophy contains so many primary sources. A number of selections have been expecially translated for this book.
Dr. Bleich's introduction to each of the Thirteen Principals place in context the selections which follow. His general introduction traces the development of dogmatic principals within Judaism, focusing especially on the Maimonidean formulation and the opposition it aroused. With Perfect Faith is an excellent text for both under-graduate and graduate studies.
