We are pleased to publish a new volume: Essays in American Jewish History
Dedicated as Festschrift Honoring the American Jewish
Archives at 60"and the Tenth Anniversary of Its Executive
Director, Dr. Gary P. Zola
A collection of new and original scholarly studies of the American Jewish
experience co-edited by Pamela S. Nadell, Jonathan D. Sarna and Lance J.
Sussman"all of whom serve on the academic advisory board of The Jacob Rader
Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives (AJA).
In the volume's preface,
Sussman writes that the volume"linked to the 1958 Essays in American Jewish
History"serves to commemorate three important events: The sixtieth
anniversaries of the AJA and the American Jewish Archives Journal, as well as the
tenth anniversary of the AJA's current executive director, Professor Gary P. Zola.
New Essays in American Jewish History contains twenty-two chronologically
comprehensive articles. The volume has already been hailed as a scholarly
benchmark in the growing field of American Jewish Studies"and in American
Jewish history more specifically" since it records the continued vitality and
increasing sophistication of this field of study. Essays span the different
movements in Judaism and include a range of subjects including Jews and
science, the history of biblical scholarship in America, Holocaust studies,
American Jewish historiography, Zionism, and cinema studies"all reflections of
contemporary currents in the field.
"Initially, I was delighted by the Academic Advisory Board's decision to
maintain the tradition of marking the AJA's significant milestones by publishing
a scholarly commemorative volume," said Dr. Zola. "The idea of honoring my
ten years of service came forward as the sixtieth volume was being
conceptualized and, for me, it was like icing on a cake. My sincere gratitude goes
to the book's excellent editors as well as to all of the capable contributors. The
overall quality of this publication has exceeded even the most hopeful
expectations, and it is a genuine honor to have my name associated with a
publication of this caliber. "
