About the Author

Dr. Alvin I. Schiff is Distinguished Professor of Education Emeritus at the Azrieli Graduate School, Yeshiva University, which he founded in 1959 as the Graduate Program of Jewish Education. He was Executive Vice-President Emeritus, Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York, which he headed for twenty-one years. He is the author of fourteen books, including The Jewish Day School in America (1966), Issachar American Style (1988), The Mystique of Hebrew (1996), and over 300 articles and monographs. He also served as editor of the Journal of Jewish Education for thirty years. In 2005, he received the Israel "President's Award for Jewish Education in the Diaspora." At the ceremony in Bet Hanassi in Jerusalem, he was characterized as the "dean of Jewish education."
