Martin Gilbert

Sir Martin Gilbert described himself as a proud, practicing Jew and a Zionist. He achieved in his life beyond what many could ever imagine.

Born in London on 25th October 1936, he was taken with a group of children from England to Canada during World War II in a British government effort to remove them from the war. After high school, he served in the British Intelligence Corp, followed by studies at Magdalen College in Oxford. He received his post-graduate degree from St Antony's College, Oxford.

Sir Gilbert wrote the 6 main volumes of the biography of Winston Churchill, and assisted Churchill's son on two other volumes. He wrote also on the Holocaust and the two World Wars.

He was involved in British governmental committees and received his knighthood "for services to British history and international relations". He also held an honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Western Ontario, and an honorary Doctorate from the Ben Gurion University of the Negev.

Sir Martin Gilbert passed away in February 2015.
